Subject: Happy 37!

Yeah 37 years ago tonight I was there with my peeps up from college, 7 months after the legendary Portland meltdown the previous September. Maine always brought out the best in the Dead and this was no exception. I remember how small and intimate the venue was, we could walk around the floor easily - practically right up to the stage! I remembered it like a gym, though the poster below clarifies it was an ice rink. I also remember nearly getting busted in the parking lot after the show; the pimple-faced U Maine cop poking around our trunk after spotting us with beers - fortunately they missed the bong and our17 year old compatriot who fled immediately into the crowd! Topped it all off by crashing at our friend’s antique vacation cottage hanging on the edge of Casco Bay. Priceless!

Subject: First Show

My first Grateful Dead show - literally walked across the street from my fraternity house (sigma phi epsilon) to this show. Remember eating some scorpion blotter before the show.

The rush to get in was amazing. The crowd crushed together and I was picked up off my feet and carried in.

Didn't really know what to expect. Was familiar with some songs but not the whole cannon.

Show was GA and what amazed me the most was the dancing - everyone was dancing and grooving to the music. I had been to a bunch of rock concerts prior to this but never experienced anything of the like of this.

Music was good but must say I didn't really get it at this show. Wasn't till my second through fifth shows in the fall of 84 (Augusta and Hartford) that the light shined upon me and I "got" it.

Still, my favorite versions of Jack Straw, FOTD, and Sugaree are from this show - cant beat familiarity

This recording sounds good, really good considering the room.

Subject: Great Show, Fair Recording

Sound in this ice rink was below average, odd shaped arena with a low end resonance that muddles Phil. The speakers were stacked on the stage, not hung from the ceiling and it was very small, less than 3,000. Great high energy show, especially the Sugaree and post Drums, Weir was “Bobby Rock-Star” during Truckin’ running around the stage. This could have been the show where he climbed up onto a stage monitor. Don’t know if there are better sounding tapes out there, a SB sure would be nice.

What a awsome way to open the 2nd set. Jerry must of felt pretty good. He really jams it, way to go
